01 Safety

Shared safety requirements and safe working practices for MPE i-Series tray sealers.

1. Scope

Applies to all MPE i-Series tray sealers unless stated otherwise.

2. Mandatory safety rules

  • Do not operate the machine without correct training.

  • Do not maintain the machine unless authorised by your engineering manager.

  • Do not bypass any guard switches or safety devices.

  • Do not operate with guards removed.

  • Do not operate while foreign objects are within the machine.

  • Do not adjust sensors or parameters without OEM approval.

3. Emergency stop

Press any emergency stop, or open a guard, to stop machine motion.

Reset is only permitted after:

  1. The cause is removed.

  2. All guards are closed.

  3. All emergency stops are reset.

4. Safety reset (typical)

Machine variants differ. This is the standard method on most i-Series HMIs.

  1. Close all guards.

  2. Pull the emergency stop button to its outer position.

  3. Press the blue System Reset button near the HMI.

  4. Acknowledge all alarms on the HMI.

  5. Wait for all servo axes to home.

5. Mandatory isolations (LOTO)

Before maintenance, cleaning, or tooling work:

  1. Electrically isolate at the main isolator and apply LOTO.

  2. Isolate gas supply (if fitted) and vent safely.

  3. Isolate vacuum supply (if fitted) and vent safely.

6. Tooling hazards

  • Tooling can be heavy. Use two-person lift or lifting aids.

  • Top tooling can remain hot after operation. Wear heat-resistant gloves.

  • Cutting blades are sharp. Handle edges only. Wear cut-resistant gloves.

  • Keep hands clear of crush points during homing and tool load/unload.

7. Cleaning hazards

  • Isolate electrically before cleaning.

  • Do not jet wash the machine.

  • Use minimal water. Protect sensors, motors, and control panels.

  • Do not use abrasives on clear guarding or touchscreens.

8. Verification before restart

  1. Guards fitted and latched.

  2. All tools removed from the machine.

  3. Tooling secured and correctly oriented.

  4. Film path clear and correctly threaded.

  5. Run a dry cycle before returning to production.

9. Records and references

  • Site risk assessment and LOTO procedure.

  • Machine-specific electrical schematics and I/O list.

  • Machine-specific gas/vacuum diagrams (if fitted).
